USPI Workshop on 16 April 2024: Lessons learned from large capital projects

Please be invited to the USPI workshop on lessons learned from large capital projects which will be held online on: 16 April 2024 from 12:00-13:30 UTC (corresponding to 14:00-15:30 CEST (Amsterdam)). The purpose of the workshop will be to share and discuss bridging the gap between IM and the business in doing large capital projects. When doing large capital projects in practice, amongst which the Pallas project in the Netherlands, we came across several problem areas and challenges in realizing the required information management system. It seemed worthwhile to share this with the experts and managers from the USPI community that has grown over the years. Bridging Information Management (IM) and engineering for the successful implementation of Common Data Environments (CDEs) within projects involves navigating various problem areas and challenges. These barriers can stem from technical, organizational, and cultural factors, among others. Understanding these barriers and their…

What is ORCHID?

ORCHID provides a maturity model that can assist in visualizing how far companies are with their information management, and it can point to where the bottlenecks may be. The digitization programs are developments to improve the quality of information and by digitalizing the information through use international standards. FL3DMS

Facility Lifecycle 3D Model Standard (FL3DMS) In April 2020 we kicked off the 3D model standard project, with ca 40 participants, which confirmed the need for standardized and improved 3D models. The strong participation was explained by the increasing importance of 3D models; they form the foundation for the digital twin and can enable many high value use-cases for the 3D model, such as advanced work planning during construction, or corrosion management; but on the condition that the 3D model and associated data is configured in a particular way. The team initially got to know each other and shared different 3D modelling practices across organisations. It also agreed the name of the standard, and chose the FL3DMS acronym for the project. The words behind the acronym reflect the scope the participants want to address with the standard. It was identified that 3D modelling is used throughout the lifecycle of the facility – in its…

Scientific publications about Digital Twins, that reference the FL3DMS 3D model standard

William Randell McNair is an active member of the FL3DMS team and has contributed actively to the development of the business case for standardizing and maintaining 3D models As Built for the full asset life. As part of his doctoral research at the University of South Florida, Randell has published three articles about Digital Twins that reference FL3DMS as a relevant industry standard development. In the third article, the FL3DMS business case development is also referenced. Randall has agreed to share these articles which we hereby publish, with gratitude for his ongoing support of the FL3DMS project. Article: “Car wash for data”: Best practices for Information and Configuration Management applied at Pallas nuclear facility

For those of you interested in how to manage the creation of a Common Date Environment (CDE) based on engineering information delivered by different companies using different engineering tools in a structured way, the article written by the USPI members Leo van Ruijven (Croonwolter&dros) and Jim Novack (Dynatec) provides a good starting point. Although the target group for the article are people in the Nuclear industry, the content of the article provides a good basis for those looking into doing the same for any other regulated industry or industry in general. The article is titled “Car wash for data”: Best practices for Information and Configuration Management applied at Pallas nuclear facility. It describes the Why, How and What for information from the engineering phase, the architecture of a Common Data Environment (CDE) that stores the information, and the process of making the information supplied by the different…

USPI Safari about ISO 19008 – Summary

USPI Safari  ISO 19008- 11 October 2022 On the 11th of October USPI organized a so-called Safari on the ISO-19008 standard cost coding system used in the project control domain to classify scope, activities, costs and quantities for oil, gas and renewable energy systems across the entire facility lifecycle. In the session Chevron, Equinor and Shell presented how they are currently using the standard across the various project control disciplines, the dataflow in capital projects, digitalization opportunities, coverage of the standard, etc. Besides major owner operators also the Performance Forum; a joint industry project; presented on the use of ISO-19008 in supplying data-centric benchmark definitions. One of the key objectives of the Safari was to drive interest and use of the standard. With over 50 attendees, the session was well attended, and we had an open, interesting and lively discussion. Members of USPI can find the presentations here Please send a mail…

USPI annual MB meeting 16 June 2022 Report

USPI MB Meeting On 16 June 2022, USPI hosted its annual Management Board meeting. With this article we want to share the key presentations with you all so you are aware of developments among in our industry and with USPI members and network. Advance Work Packaging:Mark den Boer and Jerome Jemotte presented how they have implemented Advanced Work Packaging on the Red2Green project in Pernis with a focus on how to structure data requirements in support of the process. This is the third time they are implementing AWP and they have an excellent grasp of the data requirements required to support this process. Industry tagging Philosophy:On behalf of IOGP and USPI we proposed to create an industry tagging philosophy to enable better integration via consistent tagging across scopes of different contractors, packages, vendors etc.  The presentation was well received, and we are now calling for 10-12 participants to…
